Strengths First of all, these JD mowers bought from Home Depot are not JD lawnmowers..Go to an actual JD dealer and look at thier mowers, then compare the ones sold at Home Depot....HD sells some generic lawnmower from China or Pakistan, paints them green and labels them John Deere..A 12 horse tractor from Home Depot will run you between 1000 to 1200 bucks...A 12 horse tractor from John Deere dealers will run you over 2000..Big difference in the two...
And NO! John Deere will now mess with the HD models because they are not John Deere..

Weaknesses charging system stopped working. deck spindle bearings siezed due to lack of grease fittings, the belt for the cutting deck needs to be replaced often. the back up safety button stopped working (which is actually a good thing because it was annoying to have to use).the first l120 i bought from home depot but returned it the same day when it started sputtering and overheating before i even finished cutting my lawn once. the second tractor i bought from the local john deere dealership.....the problems with that one are decribed above.
Overall piece of crap.

Implements : Snow Thrower
Purchased From : Home Depot
Strengths Cut Beautifully When It Ran. Bought the snow thrower to attach to the machine - snow thrower is expensive but was much better than the tractor.
Weaknesses I mow 2 acres of not very challenging terrain. I was "by the book" on maintenance, and then some. In four years, four transmission drive belts, four deck belts, all three deck spindles. Electrical problems and transmision was going out with less than 300 hours. Front wheel fell off during mowing. By the time I got rid of it, the engine was sounding beautiful, if you like high pitched chirping sounds...
Overall The best thing about this mower was the John Deere Green Paint and John Deere's reputation - which made her think she was actually getting something of value when I let her have it in the divorce - that meant I got to watch two pieces of shit go down the road, never to return, and I've never been happier!!!

Weaknesses All mowers are John Deere only because Roper has bought a license to put John Deere on the mower. Roper makes most of the mowers on the market. Ever wonder why they all sort og look alike? Same god makes them. So the name is not what to look for. all box store sell the same eguipment that is why you have a cheap price. If you want a Deere go to the Deere Store.

Implements : JD 120 Lawn Tractor
Purchased From : Home Depot
Strengths I've had my L120 for five years and 300 hours. When it works, it works great; I mow approximately 1 acre.
Weaknesses At 280 hours, I replaced a transmission; just like all the other owners have complained about. Now, with 302 hours, the front axle, which is made out of cast iron, just broke into two pieces. The axle breaking makes no sense to me; it didn't break at the pivot point which should be the weakest part and all I was doing was mowing grass! And, the local JD dealer wanted $300 to replace the transmission and I did it in an hour; big rip-off!
Overall I believe the two issues I have had should be warranted items - I mean a front axle with no operable parts just splitting into two; come on; that's not right! It's very unfortunate that JD, known for their quality, doesn't stand behind these lawn tractors. Mark me up as another dissatisfied owner.

Implements : bagger, push bar stupid canopy, free hat
Purchased From : cheapo depot

Weaknesses no grease fittings on spindles, high maintenance, bagger chute clogs easily, deck is cheap and rickety, had to change camshaft after 155 hrs. blades wear quickly, back up switch is a pita, battery lasts only one season, deck is loud, muffler is loud, bagger chute not rugged enough, reverse is too slow, guards around cylinder heads hold clippings and cause overheating, deck clogs easily on top and bottom, gas tank is in ridiculous location for filling, replacement air filters cost 20 bucks, smokes on startup since new, wheel bushings instead of bearings are loose, not a deere product if you ask me
Overall I mow a flat 1 acre lawn, and just use the tractor to mow. ive had it for 5 years and 150 hours it ground off the number one exhaust valve camshaft lobe. I had to replace the camshaft myself as the local deere dealer wanted 850 bucks. i replaced the battery every season even with a battery tender. the deck is getting louder probably because i cant grease the spindles and they are consuming themselves. what a pita it is to change blades to switch from mulch to bag, and the blades dont last at all.

Implements : Bagger (draft)
Purchased From : Home Depot
Strengths Gives a great cut with good power, good handling and a tight turning radius. I cut about 1.5 acres and have 110 hours on my L 120. So far none of the transmission problems or broken front axles reported by others. Belts are on their 3rd season. Blades are holding up OK. I sharpen them twice a season. Bagger tube clogs up if the grass is wet at all. I mostly mow without the bagger hooked up then go back the next day and suck up the dry clippings. Comfortable mower to ride.
Weaknesses Like others: No grease fittings on mower deck spindels, hard to reach fuel inlet, cranks longe than normal but always starts, reverse is too slow, back-up safety switch is a pain. This is a light duty lawn tractor and I doubt it will stand up to much more than cutting grass.
Overall So far a good purchase. If I had it to do over I'd probably upgrade to the next level to get a tractor capable of doing more. If I end up having the problems that others have had I may have to edit my review.
