    New Guy with a question?

Two guns pointed me over here from another post.Quick History:Bought 2005 RTV 900(318 hrs.) last week at auction. In going over the unit the only thing thats not working is the temp gauge.I'm not sure if the cooling fan is working, its been cool here in Tennessee.I've checked fuses and plug in connectors.I'm not a expert  mochanic  but  can  but most of the time get it going.I'm trying to fix it myself and save a trip to the dealer $$$$$.

At 70 degrees how long would it run for the fan to cycle? As two guns told me in at another I plan on getting a different temp gauge.

    Thanks,

    tony3542

Welcome to the forum, tony3542.  (Curious about the number...)  You'll find it is a fantastic source of information, advice, tips, and occasional (well actually lots) of weird humour...

Regarding the fan cycling time, it only very rarely gets to 70F up our way, so really have no idea.  But I suspect that it will be far more useful to get the new temperature guage and then watch the relationship between heating and fan cycling.  You should be able to see the temp rise, the fan cycle on, and then the temp drop a bit until the fan stops.  Then you at least will know that the fan switch is responding to temperature rise and fall.

Good luck with your RTV!  There are several others with 2005 models who I am sure can provide you with important and useful pointers.

I would not count your gage broken till you have it a while. The early models like yours and mine take a lot of work to get the gage up to even halfway. I hauled over 30 loads of wood in the past week and it only got part way up on the gauge maybe 6-8 times. The fan will kick on occasionally but not that often. I am talking about hard work going up steep hills with a full load of heavy wood and 3 guys in the front. If you want to check the gage and fan just block the front of the radiator with cardboard and run it around a little.

Re: New Guy with a question?

Welcome Tony3542, I have an '05 also. It has been a great machine. I have over 2940  hrs on mine and  the main replacement items have been the "rattler shaft (3x) and  carrier bearing-- and the( rear ujoints I think at 1800 hrs) I also replace the front ball joints --can't remember when but the hrs were way up there. I just replaced the ignition switch this month as it was cranking by itself. Have you tested with a tester to see if you have any "fire" coming out of the wires on the guage?   If you don't have one you can make a tester out of an old ice pick or finish nail some electric tape and auto wire ,single tail light bulb and a clip .Guages should respond with the key in- lights on- position. The temp guage does take a while to move -on mine anyway unless it is under heavy use. Otherwise, it stays at about what is equal to 1/4 tank of fuel as markings go.I don't think my fan comes on much unless the air temp is up there.. In fact , lately now that it is cooler, when mine does come on I know my radiator is full of grass seed.  If my guage were bad I would definitely get one of those recommended ones and NOT an oem.   Good luck and keep us informed.   Bordercollie

Re: New Guy with a question?

I got in touch with the previous owner today. He said the gauge and fan has always worked before. So I drove it for about 45 mins and the gauge never moved, but I do feel better after I talked with him.I did check it with a tester. The light works and its getting fire to the gauge.I still plan on changing it,is e-bay a good place to get one?To check the fan can I unplug the connector on the back of the fan above the battery and connect two wires direct from the battery?I just want to besure it works before I work the unit.Previous owner said the oil was changed about 10 hours ago with Kubota oil,so that was good.

    Thanks,

    tony

The member idea of  tempe orily restricting the air to make the temperature rise, was what I would do. I imagine the other way would work but  I have not tried that.  Use the search function in the right top corner of this forum page(not the actual google blank but "ours" and type in temperature gauge or similiar wording and see if it will show the great, informative posts  by the other members on finding the gauge and a picture  too.  Good Luck, Bordercollie

I guess to be on the safe side you'll need to check to see if there is a problem, but I would guess that everything is fine. When I first got my 2004 RTV I too thought there was a problem with the gauge and fan. It just takes a lot of work to get them both to move.

Re: New Guy with a question?

We have an 05 that runs totally "cold" according to the guage and the way the fan kicks in.  SELDOM does the guage go even up to 1/4 and when it does within 30 seconds it's back down to zero because the fan kicks in.  I do hear the fan from time to time with the guage still reading zero.  Give it a heavy load and drive it solid for 10 to 15 minutes to see what happens.  I have to turn off the engine and then turn the key back on to even be able to hear the fan.............Good luck.........NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT...........Dennis

Re: New Guy with a question?

Would this be a good choice to replace the stock temp. gauge?http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180411717320&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT                  ?Also can I run two auto type wires direct from the battery to the connector on top side of cooling fan to test?

    Thanks,tony

Re: New Guy with a question?

Looked at mine yesterday and it appears the temp switch on top of the radiator just closes a circuit. I would try just a jumper in the plug and see if it runs the fan. May want to give Messicks a call to see if they can advise on sending unit before you switch gages.
